In spite of most medical students wont go on to become ophthalmologists it is important for all doctors to have basic ophthalmology knowledge and skills. Ophthalmic medical student education is a cornerstone to improving eye health care globally. Competency - based approach results not just in better eye health, but also improvements in patient care, education, and medical care in general. The main aim for in medical education in ophthalmology is to improve evidence based education, to increase medical students’ knowledge, to graduate highly trained in eye examination skills, timely diagnosis, referrals, and treatment young doctors. The development and formation of professional competencies of the future doctor is based on the constant improvement of practical skills and abilities. We pay special attention to the formation of practical skills in ophthalmology in students. The list of practical skills that will contribute to the formation of competencies of a general practitioner has been revised. If students are better skilled in ophthalmology competencies, they might be more confident in diagnosing and managing patients outside of the specialist eye care services, such as within the emergency department. This might lead to more rapid and appropriate management resulting in improved patient outcomes, satisfaction and throughput. This text book will help students to encourage their knowledge in manipulations, methods of diagnosis, urgent help and management of patients.
